Anyone have a favourite piece of printed ephemera they've found? Perhaps most intriguing...napkin messages perhaps?

A while back my housemate found a bunch of old concert flyers from 1967-1969, mostly for Avalon Ballroom and such. Amazing pieces of poster artwork, and they were so beautifully yellowed. There were a few famous ones too, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, the like.

I tend to collect exhibition/concert/club flyers and cut them up, make collages. Spiffin fun.

Due to financial problems,I had to leave S.F. and move home to my parent's house.On the third day home I was helping my mom,organize the garage,we came upon 4 boxes that were my great aunts.At that point,I realized I hit the "Mother Lode".We opened the first one and it contained love letters from her future husband,tied in a bundle with a pink silk ribbon.The boxes also contained stuff she collected on her travels.My mom said take what you want,the rest goes in the trash!!! This 9’ scroll was type-set in wood and lead type, and then letterpressed on stark white Japanese cotton-fiber paper, in 1994 as a limited edition of 14 scrolls. The format cellebrates the recent discovery back then, of the original Dead Sea Scrolls near the border of Jordan and Israel, but it also has the spirit and innertia of an ambitious project such as was Jack Kerouack’s own endless piece of paper on which he type-wrote his classic novel “On The Road”.

Scrolls have always been a source of intreague as a format and as the perfect metaphor for chronology or linear narrativity. By way of influences from the 1960’s minimalist and experimental music realms, artists such as: Steve Reich, Meredith Munk, John Cage, et.al., the piece also references a pianola scroll with its seemingly random yet programatic array of punched holes, only this is type.

‘i’ scroll unravels with an acrobatic arrangement of words an letters, the prior commenting on the acts of ‘creating’ and ‘existing’ in-the-world, the former mimic the gutural sounds of Meredith Munk’s noise works and are arranged as a random system, a tip-of-the-hat to John Cage’s ‘chance’ compositions—having been set with all the available lead type of a font’s drawer, a commentary on the finite character of ‘old-school’ typeseting in the wake of the recent integration of the computer as a more dynamic typesetting tool, where actual letters can be typed at infinitum. The chance availability of the lead type dictated the composition.

The horizontal thrust of the piece evokes the chronologic notion implicit in Heidegger’s quote, which runs as a single line along the distance of the scroll (life/existance), the quote is set in Bouer Bodoni type , in contrast with the rest of the piece’s compositional elements (words), which are set in a variety of styles from the original Grothesque family (lead and wood type).

The word ‘Man’ is the very first word in the long composition and one of the only two elements to be printed in red ink. The other red element is one letter ‘i’ which is at the other ‘end’ of the scroll, alone, and laying on it’s side. The color connection closes the connotation that ‘i’ is the ‘ego’ of ‘Man’.

The rest of the composition aludes to a ‘trajectory’ full of quetions and dilemas possed at contrapunctual relations to the creative ‘acts’ or ‘stages’ (‘instants’) in every one of the composition’s (life’s) segments.

Bodoni is a modernist conversion of the classic serif fonts, characterized by its square serif endings and sweeping parallel lines. These Grothesque font families are emblematic of the origins of the more simplified, modernist sans-serif typestyles.

I've been volunteering to help the Friends of Palo Alto Library, sorting and lugging masses of books - you really should check out their sales - they have many of their books for around a dollar, and they also have bargain rooms where you can exit with a bag of books and ephemera for 5 bucks...

For instance, I saw a set of 60s encyclopedias that will go for next to nothing... with very cool illustrations for your art projects...

Found this during a recent "post estate sale dumpster ephemera run" and was very happy to do so. Talk about a ton of info on the night life in Stumptown in the late 40's. It includes an alphabetical list of restaurants and nightclubs. There is a talent section along with some local agents for said talent.

An Ephemera Hunting Technique

I am new here and thought I would share this technique I have been using with good results: While browsing books in a thrift/second-hand store, I make sure to fan through anything that looks rather old to look for hidden "bookmarks" people left in them when they gave them away. I have found cool old receipts, newspaper articles, coupons etc. (ok does everyone know about doing this?)

Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper

Settle yourself in for the long haul when reading Double Fold . This isn't because it is a long or boring book. It is because just about every paragraph will make you wince, pace about the room, or even feel close to tears of rage. I found the following indispensable while reading it: an asthma inhaler, some allegedly soothing aromatherapy oil, and finally a large bottle of gin.

This is the problem. Some years ago, Nicholson Baker - who, as you know, is a very talented writer indeed - wrote a piece for the New Yorker about how libraries were abandoning their old card-index catalogues in favour of computerised systems. Big deal, you might think. However, he made an eloquent case for their survival (which I think you can read in his essay collection, The Size of Thoughts ). But he then found out something more worrying: libraries were replacing their newspaper and book collections with microfilmed copies.

Fine, you might say: libraries need the space, the paper is disintegrating, and who needs a complete run of the Laramie Republic and Boomerang 1916-49 (103 volumes) anyway? It turns out that such reasoning is flawed, based on false or misleading premises. And Nicholson, with all the intelligence, wit, and doggged monomania that we know is at his command, blows these arguments right out of the water.

Let us consider what microfilming a book entails: guillotining the spine, photographing every page - and then throwing every page away. The standard test for whether a volume is sound enough to survive on the shelves is called the Double Fold test. You can do it yourself. You fold a corner of a page back on itself. Then you fold it the other way. Then you give it a tug. Repeat the process. If the paper snaps after a few times (the number depends on which library is performing the operation - it's generally between one and five), it is deemed beyond repair. Only, as everyone who has ever read an old, brittle book or newspaper knows, all such a test tells you is not to go around folding the pages. The book or journal itself, handled gently, can be used indefinitely.

Microfilm, though, has only one life. And much of that is now unusable: it spots, tears, or even fuses into a solid, opaque and useless lump. The fact that reading a microfilmed page is itself a drag - and does not reproduce any of the half-tones of, say, a newspaper illustration - is only a secondary point. And as for libraries running out of space - well, when they're not downright fibbing, there are ways around that.

That there is a full-sized book in all this, and not just a pamphlet or long essay, shows the scope and nature of the disaster, which Baker summarises neatly thus: "The truth is that certain purificationally destructive transformations of old things into new things seem to excite people - otherwise polite, educated, law-abiding people - and it's up to other normally polite people to try to stop them."

He runs into some unlikely characters in his quest to see what can be done. Not just the starry-eyed modernisers and techies at the Library of Congress, but the CIA, Nasa and the military. This isn't sinister - it's just that some of the chemicals and techniques involved in the process are better suited to military and astronautic applications.

Meanwhile, information about our past is dribbling, beyond all reach, into the maw of oblivion - tragically, for the best of motives. But the fight starts here.

I've accumulated some cool labels & such from work that I was thinking of scanning and adding to the album. We occasionally get catalogs & packages from Asia. I've been saving some of the packing materials and odd bits - some interesting asian text & graphics. Is there a perferred resolution for the scans?

are both glued in a scrapbook - a copy of "bible footlights for the pilgrims path" that someone turned into a scrapbook - has things glued into it dated 1855 through early 1930s - mostly news paper clippings about car accidents/farm accidents/horrible deaths - stories about multiple births or adult multiple siblings - really really old people - and prayers -
this is one of my farovite objects because i also have the diary 1955-59 of the same woman who made this -
her xmas lists are beautiful . . .
ill try and scan them - this scanner is makin funny strech marks in the image though - i can go back and heal it - but its a drag . . .
anyone run into that before?

Do you collect any type of PE in particular? Do you pick things up off the sidewalk if they look interesting?

I collect whatever catches my eye. I have been looking for weird scraps of paper but have not found anything good in a long time. I think if you live/work around schools that's one goldmine. I remember reading once how this guy had collected all these different kids notes, everything from flirting to notes about being abused. very evocative.

this, i think, is only for people in los angeles.

does anyone remember --during the very late 70s & early 80s-- a whole bunch of psychotic (really) tracts pasted to telephone polls, bus benches, newspaper boxes, light poles, on & on, written by a schizophrenic girl who called herself "becky the star trek saint"??

my exhusband & i used to collect them. i think somewhere i still have -one-.

lots of weird handwriting, drawings of unicorns, stuff like that.

{whenever i mention my exhusband & what is now such an early date i feel like i must sound a million years old but really i got married when i was 16 & i was living in his house long before that. i wish i could write this explanation out once & everyone would know it, or i wish i did not feel the need to write it out, but there it is.}

this is my favorite ephemera, at any rate, for all sorts of reasons. does anyone besides me remember it??

Tokens of my affections

I collect wooden nickles, metal tokens, and coins. I have quite a collection of SCA favors, some handcast in pewter. I really should make a shadow box for those things. Right now they are just hanging on pegs from my IKEA bookcase. I found a website where you can order your own wooden nickles and I am sorely tempted.
I've been painting on stones to leave about for people to find, but I'm thinking of painting a coffee can full of wooden discs someone game me after they were left over from favor making at an SCA event.
Sometimes I make my own gift tokens to hand out to performers at SCA events to show my appreciation.
My friend (who is a swordfighter) makes leather tokens and hands them out to anyone that bested him in battle.
There are many ways to sneak art into the world.

Sidewalk finds-What's the best piece of ephemera you have found?

This weekend I found a box marked "Free" on the sidewalk. I couldn't help but look in, and was happily surprised to find several interesting things: A 1906 account of the San Francisco Earthquake, several turn of the century illustrated poetry books, an arcane book of parliamentary rules of order (with baffling fold out flow chart) and a couple of secret society rule books. There were also several photos and clippings of a 40s lounge singer. I will post up images asap.

What interesting stuff have you guys come across? Please share

art ist needed

I made these 35 books, blank on the inside, I screen printed a rough fleshy colored rectangle on the cover. The theme is s k i n. I have been doing mail art for some time now. I am mailing these books to artist around the world, they elaborate on them and send them back to me, I am working on finding a gallery to show the completed works, but combinding them all into one reproducable book would be ideal. This is the first time I have mailed out books, I have done postcards before and I have made several artist books, so I decided to combind my two endeavors. So I was trying to find the postcards I mentioned in another thread, and when I did, sadly, they are now all crumply-seeming. One of them is an accordian-type postcard picture-booklet and the other just a regular old postcard. The accordian-type one is coming apart at the folds, which prolly can't be totally avoided, but still, I want to figure out how to store my printed ephemera in a better way so as to avoid further "issues." I was storing them in an archival photograph box but I guess it didn't really do much "archiving." Storage tips, anyone?

Glad to find this tribe of the fellow collecting-obsessed...

Where do I start? I collect so much stuff - a large part of my collection is printed ephemera, or related to it - I have a love of any kind of work on paper, and have a fascination for all things print (I studied printmaking in school, and am a commercial designer/graphic artist)...

Here's part of the list:

-Postcards (1800s - 1960s, much around 1910)
(all different subjects, but a special interest in dance-related, ones from argentina, ones of women in men's clothing or military dress), etc.) - I like them for the graphics, the stories, the writing/script...

-Dance Music Books (from Germany, mostly around 1920s-30s)

-Dance cards (given out at dances to write down who you promised a dance to)

-Vintage sheet music (from the early 1900s - 50s, mostly from the 30s and 40s) - quite a lot! Lately, I have mostly picked up sheet music with uke chords... and some old instruction books on the uke...

-Antiquarian and illustrated books (starting from around 1880 onwards) - piles and piles - from Chiang Yee, the Silent Traveller series (30s-40s) to multiple different illustrated copies of Arabian Nights, from antique books on girl's health or sex or physiology to children's books by EB White or EH Sheperd...

-Prints (etching, lithographs, silkscreen, woodcuts, other relief printing)

-All kinds of old ads, from ones for fountain pens to women's undergarments, to funny and odd ones...

-30s Sunset magazines, 50s Punch magazines, 40s and 50s photo magazines, early books on how to draw, with 30s or 50s models...

-Pin-up playing cards (dirty pictures, oh my!)

-Other people's old photos (like ones with Zeppelins and old automobiles, and non-PC tourist attractions)

Related collections:

-vintage fountain pens

-writing ephemera: ink bottles, ink wells, antique dip pens, vintage pencils, lead and lead containers, display boxes

-A huge reference library on all types of paper collecting, from sheet music to WPA posters, to pulp covers, to children's books, to graphics from every culture, to printing techniques and typography, you name it...

Some of my favorite items are:

-Return of the Strap (1930s art deco line pen illustrations, printed by Gargoyle Press of NY, with deckled page edges - on flaggelation - very titillating ;-)
-A book, accordian fold, held together with two tufts of silk, and printed in japan with woodcuts, translated into english, from a series of japanese fairy tales - about the Monkey and the Jellyfish... (victorian period)
-a postcard of a tiki room in a funeral parlour... (circa 50s)
