I share the weakness. There is something so hopefull and optimistic about them- as well as kind of disturbing because usually those old recipes are so bad for you. I, for one, was raised on casseroles straight out of Family Circle and Sunset so there is some nostalgia for the day when food was just food and not a complicated chemistry lesson like today.

I also tend to gravitate toward the Better Homes and Gardens interior decorating books for similar reasons: an all-plaid room with a red shag carpet- perfect!

Oh the recipes are horrible most of the time! I am a chef and I have a very large cookbook collection to boot, I collect this particular ephemera for it's nostalgic value only.

As for food being a chemistry lesson, take out the middle man, buy local, fresh, cook your own, know what you eat, live longer and happier.

All-plaid room and a red shag carpet does sound sweet! I will see if I can post a perfect room for you later.
